Lakeland Symphony Orchestra

Hans Christian Andersen said it best: “Where words fail, music speaks.”

Jay Erwin knew that when he and Dr. Ken Anderson rallied together 30 of their friends to perform as the Lakeland Civic Symphony in 1965. Over the next 55+ years, the group grew with the community, welcoming amateur and professional musicians to share the joys of live music with Lakeland and Polk County.

Known since 1987 as the Imperial Symphony Orchestra, the group transitioned to a professional orchestra in 2016 and Lakeland became home to one of just 12 small- to mid-size professional orchestras in Florida. Through concerts, lectures and school-based programs, staff and musicians strive to share education, entertainment and inspiration through great music.

In 2021, we’re reimagining the Symphony for the next generation – including a return to the original name: Lakeland Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to symphonic music, the Symphony is home to Lakeland Opera, welcoming opera professionals to the community to perform and teach in Florida Southern College’s opera theatre department.
